TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (December 5, 2017) - Both Tallahassee Community College men's and women's basketball teams have been rewarded for their respective 10-0 and 9-0 starts in the NJCAA's first Division I Basketball Polls of the regular season, released on Tuesday.
For the Tallahassee women, today's No. 5 ranking marks the highest in school history. The previous high was a No. 6 ranking almost 21 years ago – January 21, 1997, to be exact.
The Eagles were ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA's preseason poll.
For head coach Franqua "Q" Bedell, it's another step in seeing his vision for the program come to fruition.
"This goes back to the day I interviewed for the job (in 2013) – both academically and being a top five program on the court," said Bedell. "This team is being rewarded for the hard work they have put in – but it also reflects on the hard work of the student-athletes and coaches who have come before them.
"We're honored to continue that legacy."
Meanwhile, the Tallahassee men jumped nine spots to No. 4 after receiving a No. 13 ranking in the NJCAA's preseason poll. Not only is it the highest ranking under head coach Mark White, but it is the Eagles' first trip inside the top five – and highest ranking overall – since February 27, 2001, when they were No. 2.
"It's a credit to our players," said White. "Through the first ten games, we've played only three home games, and we've had some tough games that have come down to the wire and they've found a way to win.
"Teams have been getting up for us, and they are going to get up even more going forward."
Combined, this marks the first time in school history that both the men and women are ranked in the top five simultaneously.
Earlier today, both teams remained No. 2 in their respective NJCAA Region 8 Coaches' Polls.
